Drinkng straignt from a cold mountain stream is often the daydream of any outdoors-man. However, even a seemingly perfect mountain stream has its risks and side effect that you want to be aware of. Water borne diseases can ruin any back country trip and can make you extremely ill. This does not mean that all springs and water sources contain water born diseases and are unsafe to drink, but what it does mean is that extra precautions are needed in order to stay safe and healthy.
Three tips to help you avoid water born diseases:
1. Always carry water purification devices regardless of circumstances
2. Observe if you are in a remote area which is high in elevation, you are more likely to find water that is safer to drink. That is because whatever is upstream will pour into lowstream and most likely to contaminate water at the base.
3. Do your best not to contaminate water yourselves by not washing dishes, bathing, or defecating within 200 feet of a water source.
